The TMT (Treadmill Test) is a common heart test used to understand how the heart works during physical activity. It is also called an exercise stress test. During the test, a person walks on a treadmill while their heart rate, blood pressure, and ECG are monitored.
Doctors may recommend a TMT test when they want to check how the heart responds to exercise or investigate symptoms such as chest discomfort, shortness of breath, unusual tiredness, or dizziness.
What Is a TMT Test?
A TMT test records the heart's electrical activity while the body is exercising. At rest, some heart-related problems may not be noticeable. Exercise makes the heart work harder, which can help doctors identify certain abnormalities.
During the test, small electrodes are placed on the chest to record the ECG. The patient then walks on a treadmill. The speed and incline are gradually increased according to the patient's condition and the doctor's instructions.
Throughout the test, the medical team monitors the patient's heart rate, blood pressure, ECG, and symptoms.
When Is a TMT Test Recommended?
A doctor may recommend a TMT test for several reasons, including:
- Checking for signs of reduced blood flow to the heart
- Investigating chest pain or discomfort
- Understanding unexplained shortness of breath
- Evaluating unusual tiredness during physical activity
- Assessing exercise capacity
- Monitoring certain heart conditions
- Checking the effectiveness of some heart treatments
A TMT is not required for everyone. Your doctor will decide whether the test is appropriate based on your symptoms, medical history, age, and overall health.
How Is the TMT Test Performed?
Before starting, the healthcare professional may ask about your health history and current symptoms. Electrodes are attached to your chest, and a blood pressure cuff is placed on your arm.
You will then start walking slowly on the treadmill. The speed and incline may gradually increase. Your heart activity and blood pressure are monitored throughout the test.
You should immediately tell the medical team if you experience chest pain, severe breathlessness, dizziness, or unusual discomfort.
The test may be stopped when you reach the target level of exercise, develop significant symptoms, or when the doctor decides that enough information has been collected.
How Should You Prepare for a TMT?
Your healthcare provider may give you specific instructions before the test. Generally, you may be advised to:
- Wear comfortable clothing and suitable walking shoes.
- Avoid eating a heavy meal shortly before the test.
- Inform your doctor about all medicines you take.
- Follow your doctor's instructions about medications before the test.
- Avoid strenuous exercise before the test if advised.
Do not stop any prescribed medicine unless your doctor specifically tells you to do so.
Why Is TMT Useful?
A TMT can provide useful information about how your heart performs when it is under physical stress. It can help doctors decide whether additional cardiac evaluation or treatment may be needed.
However, a TMT is only one part of a heart evaluation. Depending on your symptoms and health history, your doctor may recommend other tests such as an ECG, echocardiogram, blood tests, or imaging.
