Pregnancy is an important stage in a woman’s life, and the early weeks can bring several physical and emotional changes. Some women notice pregnancy symptoms within a few weeks of conception, while others may not experience any noticeable symptoms at first.
Knowing the early signs of pregnancy can help you understand when it may be time to take a pregnancy test or consult a doctor.
1. Missed Period
A missed period is one of the most common early signs of pregnancy. If your menstrual cycle is usually regular and your period is unexpectedly late, pregnancy could be one possible reason. However, stress, hormonal changes, weight changes and other conditions can also affect your menstrual cycle.
2. Nausea or Morning Sickness
Nausea is another common pregnancy symptom. It can happen at any time of the day, although it is often called "morning sickness." Some women may also experience vomiting or increased sensitivity to certain smells.
3. Breast Changes
Hormonal changes during early pregnancy can make the breasts feel tender, swollen or heavier than usual. The nipples may also become more sensitive. These changes can sometimes occur even before a missed period.
4. Feeling More Tired
Unusual tiredness is common during early pregnancy. Increased levels of the hormone progesterone, along with other changes happening in the body, can make you feel sleepy or fatigued even after getting enough rest.
5. Frequent Urination
You may find yourself visiting the bathroom more often during early pregnancy. Hormonal changes and increased blood flow to the kidneys can contribute to more frequent urination.
6. Food Cravings or Changes in Taste
Some women experience sudden food cravings or develop a dislike for foods they previously enjoyed. Changes in taste and increased sensitivity to smells can also occur during pregnancy.
7. Mild Cramps or Spotting
Some women may experience mild abdominal cramps or light spotting around the time a period is expected. However, bleeding during pregnancy should not be ignored, particularly if it is heavy or accompanied by significant pain.
8. Mood Changes
Hormonal changes can affect emotions during early pregnancy. You may feel more emotional, irritable or sensitive than usual. Mood changes can also happen for many other reasons, so this symptom alone cannot confirm pregnancy.
When Should You Take a Pregnancy Test?
If you have missed your period and are experiencing several of these symptoms, consider taking a home pregnancy test. A pregnancy test detects the hormone hCG, which increases after pregnancy begins. For more reliable results, follow the instructions on the test kit carefully.
If the test is positive, schedule an appointment with a gynaecologist for appropriate evaluation and pregnancy care.
When Should You See a Doctor?
Seek medical advice if you have severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, dizziness, fainting or other concerning symptoms. Early medical care can help identify potential problems and support a healthy pregnancy.
